Everyday Routines That Build Toddler Communication

Simple ways families can grow first words, gestures, and understanding during meals, bath time, and play — no flashcards required.

Toddlers learn to communicate through thousands of small back-and-forth moments with the people they love. You don't need special materials — your daily routines are full of chances to talk, wait, and respond.

Strategies to try today

  • Get face to face: sit or kneel at your child's level so they can see your mouth and expressions.
  • Narrate the moment: “Splash! Water on your toes.” Short, simple words work best.
  • Pause and wait: give your child a few seconds to respond with a sound, look, or gesture.
  • Offer choices: “Banana or crackers?” while holding up both.
  • Repeat and expand: if your child says “ball,” respond with “Big ball!”
  • Sing the same songs: repetition helps children predict and join in.

If you have concerns about your child's communication, talk with your pediatrician or your local regional center about an Early Start evaluation.
